We are going up!

Last night was a night I will never forget. It was the night we secured promotion to the top tier again, after 4 years in the 2nd tier. I love football all over the world of all levels and quality, but my own local football club VVV-Venlo will always be my first love. It was a magical, thrilling and exciting night.

It has been an exciting season and the season hasn’t even come to its end. After last year’s 2nd place it was hard to work on the disappoint of not going up. Although everyone thought we were the favourites, it was a difficult way to promotion. It’s never easy to win a football match, let alone when everyone expects you to just win the bloody title. With just one win to go to get promotion, everyone was hoping for a great day.

Only one team does get promoted to the top tier, the champion. Well this year it’s slightly different. Because of the involvement of B-teams, there’s a possibility that not a champion will get promoted but someone else. Because two of the B-teams are 2nd and 3rd, we could get promoted first and champions second. I know this all sounds very vage, but the point is that we had to win yesterday to go up.

I had good feelings about it all, because it was just written in folklore if you ask me. In 2007 we went up by defeating RKC Waalwijk in the play off final. And we played at RKC yesterday and something told me this was going to be a massive day. I was so excited and nervous. OMG. I’ve never experienced such scenes in my head and body in anticipation of a football match. Well, that is not completely true, but these nervous feelings were not needed, because we have been easily the best team in the league in my opinion. Then again, I might be a tad biased.

We had a good away following in the second half of the season and especially last night, where we had 650 away. Now for many of the English or German readers out there, I know it’s not much. But for a 2nd tier club in a country where football supporting is not what it’s used to be, I think it’s pretty decent amount of supports to travel.

The game wasn’t good. Not good at all pals. Somehow I think it’s typical to have a shit game when you are in this stage of the season to be honest. The first goal was scored in the 38th when we were awarded a penalty, a good decision by the ref. No really a good decision. Leemans converted from the spot to give us the lead just before halftime.

The second half didn’t start too well to be honest, in the 56th minute we conceded a goal. The hosts were given a penalty after a charge on one of their players. Again, this was a good decision, but it was so hard to process this. 1-1 against the #10 of the league and no promotion with a draw. I was in all states. Shouting, stamping my feet. It was mad. I was mad. I needed the bloody win. We played bad the second half, really bad. But in the 90th minute we were given a free kick, 20 metres from the goal. He just put it in the corner to give us late, late drama! 1-2 in the dying seconds of the game which could only mean one thing: WE ARE GOING UP!!!

I was and still am so happy. Tears. Goosebumps. Adrenaline. I bloody love football.
