The football season is coming to a close. Champions are crowned, play offs places are claimed and the deep sorrow of relegation is upon us. Euphoria and utter despair our close comrades, but for me it’s all good. I love seeing the season unfold and planning my trips to the UK, football wise. Here’s a short overview of who’s going up and who’s going down at the moment.
The Premier league, well I’ve never been a big fan of the Prem in the last few years. It’s not that I don’t like the clubs, but it is the money factory that it represents that I loath. I really do enjoy the football and especially the fierce rivalry between certain teams. Chelsea is probably going to win the premier league and overall, I think they have been the strongest. A few slips near the end of the season, but they have been really consistent. I think Spurs are doing a fantastic job, finishing this high probably. Also no St. Totteringham’s Day this year, unlucky for the Arsenal fans.
I was hoping for a Tees-Tyne-Wear Derby extravaganza next season, but Middlesbrough and Sunderland have disappointed me. In the beginning of the season, I thought Middlesbrough played good football and might do a ‘Bournemouth’, but they lack scoring abilities. Sunderland had used all karma points and avoided relegation for the past 2 or 3 years, so they thoroughly deserved it to go down. I’m a bit conflicted about the last relegation place. I want Swansea City to stay up, because I like the club. But recent events with the board and the possibility of a South Wales derby next year, do excite be for the championship. I don’t particularly like Hull City, but they have fought back this season and play good football. Hate the owners still.
So Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United have been promoted already and they are going to fight on the last matchday of the season who’s going to be crowned champions. Newcastle is too big of a club to not be in the Premier League and Brighton have really deserved it this season. Last season they were a proper team, but they have really lived up to the expectations, fully deserved. Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Fulham are in the play offs. I think they all are good teams to be promoted, but I would love to see Sheffield in the premier league. If they don’t get promoted, well we got a Steel City Derby next season in the premier league.
Rotherham nearly escaped relegation last season and they have been abysmal this season. Relegation is the only thing they deserve if we look at the way they played. Wigan Athletic also relegated and they just don’t have the power and quality to be a steady championship team. They have dropped levels, because we all remember that FA cup winning Wigan team. It’s so odd to see clubs doing poorly, while they have a great history. It’s going to be decided on the last day of the season who’s going to be relegated. Is it Blackburn rovers? Notthingham Forest or Birmingham City? My eyes will focus on that!
Okay one thing is sure in League One: Sheffield United is BANGING. 100 points, which is pretty mad innit? They thoroughly deserves to be champions. And we might see a Steel City derby next season!! Also Bolton Wanderers are back to the championship, it’s good to see that they are on their way ‘back’. If we look to the play offs, we see the likes of Bradford and Millwall, who have been more succesful in the past. But also we got the likes of Scunthorpe and Fleetwood, who not so long ago played their matched in League Two!
Port Vale, Swindon, Coventry and Chesterfield relegated. I hate this, because I want a Port Vale – Stoke City derby, but it’s not happening for at least a few seasons now. Coventry is a brilliant club and I wonder how they will cope with being relegated.
Well, I’m so GASSED because my team Plymouth Argyle is back in League One! They even can clinch the title if they win the last game. It’s good to see Doncaster bouncing back and also Pompey after years of uncertainty and despair. It’s going to be one hell of a play off, because Luton, Exeter, Carlisle and Blackpool are in the mix. I just want them all to get promoted to be fair. To be fair, I only want Exeter to be promoted to have a good derby match for plymouth.
Relegation is absolutely heartbreaking, but when you are relegated from League two it means something more serious: you are leaving professional football. Hartlepool and Leyton, two of my favourite teams. I just feel their heartbreak and I really hope they bounce back, because it’s so hard out in the Non-League world. I especially hope it for the fans.
Well it’s not a surprise that Lincoln City is being promoted to League Two after their fenomenal FA cup run this season beating several Premier League, Championships and League One/Two teams in it. They did brilliant in the league as well and that see them rewarded with the title. Tranmere Rovers and Dagenham trying to bounce back from relegation last season, also FGR and Aldershot are hopeful for a spot in League Two.
It’s horrible to see, but York City have faced back to back relegation now. Where they were on the brink of League One a few seasons back, now they will play the National League North next season. The fans of York could really need some shoulders to cry on. Also Braintree, Southport and North Ferriby will take a step back after they failed to leave the relegation zone. Guiseley and Chester lucky this season.
I really love football and I would be very happy to talk with you all about it. I’ve only spoken about the top 5 leagues in the country, because I thought that would be most relatable, but I’m very happy to discuss more leagues!
