Sometimes I feel like the world is so fast paced, that I’m being lived rather than living my life. I think it’s quite important to regularly have some time to reflect on our lives and have some quality time with our loved ones. Recently I’ve been subject to the importance of such quality time and I’m starting to appreciate that more and more. Well let me rephrase that. I’m always appreciative of quality time, but now I’ve started to appreciate coffee more. It makes it better.
I’m not saying that coffee is the end all know all, but the culture behind coffee is vast. It’s so different to all other beverages, but I would love to have a similar kind of culture behind tea or hot chocolate. Don’t get me wrong. But there’s something amazing about having a cup of coffee in a coffee place and just talk. Talk like there’s no tomorrow and that’s something that gives me great joy.
I’m not a mad coffee lover as in that I have tasted every form of coffee on the menu, not at all. But I’m starting to drink more coffee. I don’t know exactly why, perhaps it’s because I’m surrounded with people who drink a lot of coffee. it’s safe to say that I’m infected with the coffee virus at this point.
The most important thing about this all is not the coffee, but it’s the quality time. After moving to Rotterdam, my life has been quite busy with so much adult stuff. Working, studying, shopping, cleaning and paying bills. In that capacity it’s easy to lose sight of what’s most important in life: your health and your relationships. Those relations never went away or deteriorated or anything, but putting emphasis on the quality rather than the quantity is so important.
To sit down with someone, enjoy each others company and talk about all things in life. I love to talk about problems in society – not that I want them to be there – and ethical philosophy. These are in-depth conversation materials which you need to take the time for, because otherwise the depth and meaning of the conversation is quite lost. But I also like to listen to what other people have to say about their life or their interests. It’s very important to me, to actively engage in the stuff people have to say.
I try to have quality time with my girlfriend as often as possible, but each Sunday we go out and have a cup of coffee alongside breakfast or lunch. It’s pretty cool and it makes me appreciate her so much more. Just like I’m starting to appreciate life more and more, every single day.
