What the hell am I doing with my social media?

Social media

Social media. The digital world – and some would say others worlds as well – are dictated and consumed by this form of media. I think that the most of you that read this post, do have accounts on different types of social media. I know I have. So I wanted to have a little chat about all the social media out there, how it makes me feel overwhelmed sometimes and which social media I’m planning to use in 2019 and beyond.

2018: What am I doing?

I had a very enlighten talk with my girlfriend at the end of 2017 about social media. I was too much concerned about social media and the need to be active on it, so I made a decision to take it easier with it. But it did leave me in a weird kind of void, I had no idea what to do. You see, if you know me you know that I have to different paces: 0 or 100. So my existence on social media was close to non-existent for the whole year and all those social media platforms were just having me as a number that didn’t contribute to their platform at all.

So. many. platforms.

Social media has been big and has only become bigger over the years. I was reading a book on the culture of connectivity, but they only spoke about a certain amount of social media: Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Youtube and Flickr. Now this list is evidently bigger in reality and has become bigger over the years. Now the likes of Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Goodreads, IMDB, Reddit, Ask.fm and Tumblr are considered to that group as well, according to Digital Marketing Institute. I had a look at a list of social networking site on Wikipedia and oh-my-word, how many social networking sites are there?!

If I focus on myself I still use a lot of those social media platforms, but in 2019 I want to concentrate on the ones I use frequently. When I look at the apps I installed on my mobile phone, I find the following platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Reddit
  • Youtube
  • LinkedIn
  • IMDb
  • Goodreads

Twitter, Instagram and Reddit are platforms I rather frequently use. With that I mean on a daily basis. YouTube is the same, but I need to make the distinction between the aforementioned and YouTube. I’m a consumer of YouTube, but I don’t produce content anymore. I usually just look at the posts that I was mentioned in. LinkedIn, IMDb and Goodreads are also platforms that I use frequently, but not on a daily basis and therefore are less ‘important’.

What now?

This might strike you as a bit weird, but I kind of missed social media in some ways. Most of the post in 2019 are: new year, new me, less social media. Look, I didn’t miss the endless scrolling and spending too much time looking at my screen. But I did miss actively engaging in conversations about football, mental health, politics or else. This made me feel happy feelings and that’s something I want to regain in the coming year. Although I still want to cut the time I spent on social media platforms, because there’s a life to be lived and to be frank, it’s not healthy.

Concretely speaking, I will be quite active on Instagram, Twitter and Reddit, me thinks. These give me the most joy and kind of the satisfaction I seek for. Facebook on the contrary gives me negative vibes and would like to stay away from it, as much as possible. One of the reasons that I want to use Twitter more and structured, is that I want to make something out this blog again in the coming months. I’ve exciting ideas for it and I feel like Twitter could definitely help with that.

I consciously made the decision to use less social media, but the social media that I use, I want to use better and with more structure. Right now, Twitter is my favourite social media platform. What’s your favourite social media platform? Let me know in the comments!

It’s a toughie isn’t it? I sometimes think I need to spend less time on social, but make the time I do spend on social really productive rather than mindlessly scroll!

Yes it definitely is! I get what you mean, mindlessly scrolling is something I need to work on.
